Director of Tennis, USPTA, PTR
Thomas is a three-time collegiate All-American and former head men's tennis coach at the University of Virginia. At UVA, Johnston established himself as one of the most innovative and successful coaches in the country. In 1997, UVA qualified for the national team tournament for the first time in the school's history. In another first, Thomas led his team to the finals of the 1998 ACC Championships and NCAA Regional Championships. Under his leadership, the team's NCAA national ranking improved from No. 95 to No. 15. Upon graduating, several of his students went on to achieve ATP world rankings.
Before joining Sea Colony, Thomas headed an award-winning tennis program at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia for 10 years. He was also named the USTA's 2015 Delaware District Pro of the Year.
Under Thomas' guidance as Tennis Director, Sea Colony is one of the top 20 resorts in the country, according to Tennis Resorts Online.com. In 2012 and 2016, Johnston led Sea Colony to a USTA Outstanding Facility of the Year award. A respected speaker offering seminars on the mental and strategic aspects of tennis, he has also published numerous sports-related articles. With a master's degree in sports psychology, Thomas has completed his coursework for a doctorate in sports psychology.
Thomas has two children, Robert Alexander (Xan) and Julianne Marie (JJ). His son Xan will be playing Lacrosse at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL in the fall. JJ is an accomplished piano, lacrosse and tennis player.
Assistant Director of Tennis, USPTA, PTR
Alex is a USPTA Elite professional and a PTR certified professional who has achieved certifications in all four PTR pathways: Adult Development, Junior Development (10 & Under and 11-17) and Performance. He also holds specialized certifications in Cardio Tennis and Wheelchair Tennis. He was named Delaware’s 2012 PTR Pro of The Year and Tennis Industry Magazine's 2013 Top 30 Under 30 professionals in the country.
Alex specializes in high performance training for all ages. During his time at Sea Colony, he has trained and helped hundreds of collegiate athletes achieve their goals. He uses the newest innovative methods and technology available in the industry.
Before rejoining Sea Colony, Alex was the Director of Tennis of Cattail Creek Country Club in Howard County, MD. As a player, he competed in ITF and Futures Circuit in the United States, Mexico and Europe. As a junior, Justiniani trained at the world renowned Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head Island, SC. Alex is a 5.0 rated player.
Alex brings 15 years of teaching experience to the resort program, including eight right here at Sea Colony. Alex has three Children, Alia, Alex Jr. and Isabella.
Senior Tennis Professional
Josh Smith is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and began playing tennis at the age of 12. Josh grew up playing tournaments in the Middle States section before he attended Penn State University. During his time at Penn State he spent 3 years working for the Women’s Tennis team both as a manager and later as a sparring partner. Josh also taught the Penn State junior summer camps in 2015 and 2016.
After graduating from Penn State in 2017, Josh worked for Van Der Meer Tennis Academy and had the good fortune to train and travel with players from around the south and the world. In addition, he is PTR Certified in the 11-17 year-old pathway. A 5.0 USTA rated player, Josh has captained several 5.0 teams.
Josh looks forward to joining the Sea Colony Tennis staff and working with all ages and ability levels to help everyone improve their game and to enjoy the sport more.
